Madhavi graduated in May 2025 with a master's in computer science, concentrating in data science, after a BTech. She was already working as a data analyst at a technology firm and had an analyst role before that.
Her OPT clock was running. Over four months she sent about 75 applications. The few callbacks were for contract analyst roles paying below market, nothing near the $85K range she was qualified for.
What we saw on the resume
Her resume was laid out like a new grad's: education first, a skills list second, experience last. It opened with a general summary and mentioned dashboards without saying what they did. Her two analyst jobs, with real numbers behind them, were at the bottom.
What we changed
- Moved experience above education and opened with her current results.
- Rewrote strong projects like professional work and removed weak ones.
- Replaced the general summary with a specific one: operational analytics and real-time pipelines.
Her first interview came about two weeks later.
“I'd applied to 76 jobs and got maybe three callbacks, all for contract roles. The rewrite got me three interviews in two weeks.”
Where it ended
Data Analyst, $92K
28 interviews from 330 applications, with healthcare analytics and a mid-size retail company.
