Networking Scripts for International Students (OPT and H1B)
International students hear “you must network” constantly. Almost nobody hands you messages that do not sound desperate. This guide is a set of short scripts you can send as yourself: alumni, recruiters, hiring managers, and warm intros. Magmira does not send LinkedIn messages on your behalf. You own this channel.
Short answer: Keep notes short, specific, and easy to answer. Ask for information or a 15-minute chat before you ask for a referral. Mention OPT or H1B calmly when it is relevant, never as an apology. Pair networking with a real application system (OPT guide).
Not legal advice. Your status questions stay with your DSO and attorney.
Rules that keep replies coming
1. One ask per message. Chat or advice, not “refer me + review resume + intro to VP.”
2. Prove you did homework. Name the team, product, or post you noticed.
3. Make the yes easy. Offer two time windows or a single clear question.
4. Follow up once. Then move on. Silence is data.
5. Do not paste AI sludge. If it could belong to anyone, rewrite it.
Script 1: Alumni cold note
Subject line (email) or first line (LinkedIn):
Hi {{Name}}, I am a {{School}} {{Grad year}} grad on OPT, now targeting {{Role family}} roles. I saw you moved from {{Past}} into {{Company}}. Would you have 15 minutes in the next two weeks to share how your team hires international grads? Happy to work around your calendar.
Why it works: identity + respect + single ask.
Script 2: Recruiter after you applied
Hi {{Name}}, I applied to {{Role}} ({{Req ID or date}}) on {{Date}}. I have {{X years}} in {{Domain}} with recent work on {{One proof}}. Open to a brief screen if helpful. Authorized to work on OPT {{/ STEM OPT}}; happy to share timing details.
Why it works: applied already, proof, authorization without essay.
Script 3: Hiring manager (warm, not needy)
Hi {{Name}}, I follow {{Team / product}} and applied to {{Role}}. One relevant example: {{One sentence outcome}}. If you are open to it, I would value any note on what “strong” looks like for this req. No pressure either way.
Script 4: Ask for a referral (only after a real chat)
Hi {{Name}}, thanks again for the chat on {{Day}}. Based on what you shared about {{Team need}}, I am applying to {{Role}}. If you are comfortable referring, I can send a 3-bullet blurb and the req link today. If not, I still appreciate the advice.
Script 5: Follow-up (7 days later)
Hi {{Name}}, quick bump on my note from {{Date}} about {{Topic}}. Still happy to keep it to 15 minutes, or a voice note if easier. Thanks either way.
Script 6: After rejection or silence on a role
Hi {{Name}}, I know the {{Role}} loop closed. If you are open to it, one thing I am improving from the process is {{Skill}}. If another req on your team opens for {{Level}}, I would welcome a heads-up.
How to talk about visa status without killing the thread
Use one line, then return to value:
- “I am authorized to work on OPT in roles related to my {{field}} degree.”
- “I would need a standard H1B transfer with a new employer; happy to share timing with your immigration counsel.”
Do not open with “Will you sponsor?” as the first sentence. Earn the conversation, then be direct.

Weekly networking cadence (realistic)
| Day | Action |
|---|---|
| Mon | 5 alumni notes |
| Wed | 3 recruiter or HM notes tied to live applications |
| Fri | 2 follow-ups + update tracker |
If you cannot keep this cadence and applications, consider execution help for apps so networking stays human: done-for-you vs DIY.

FAQ
Should I mass-message 100 people a day?
No. Ten good notes beat 100 templates. Quality replies compound.
Do I need a referral to get hired on OPT?
No, but referrals raise signal. Applications still matter. See our case study.
Will Magmira send these for me?
No. Magmira does not run LinkedIn outreach on your behalf.
What if English is not my first language?
Keep sentences short. Specific beats fancy. One clear proof line outperforms long adjectives.
