How to Change a Misleading Job Title on Your Resume
A misleading job title on your resume creates a trap. It may pass a keyword screen, then collapse in the first five minutes of an interview when your scope does not match the label.
Short answer: Prefer accurate titles. If your internal title was odd or inflated, use a clear market title plus the official title, or explain scope in the first bullet. Never invent a promotion you did not hold.

- Internal titles that mean nothing outside the company (“Ninja,” “Rockstar,” coded levels)
- Inflated titles that oversell seniority

Option C: Dual role when scope truly spanned both

- Promote yourself by one full level on paper
- Copy a target JD title that was never your role

- Hide a title change that conflicts with LinkedIn and employment verification

How to decide in two questions
1. Would my manager agree this title describes my level?
2. Can I defend the scope in a screen without hedging?
If either answer is no, rewrite.
